arriving in Songkla Old Town

 When I was researching Hat Yai city, I came across an area called Songkhla Old Town, a historical area with antique shops and Chinese architecture. I just happened to look at Agoda at that moment and found a hotel which looked fun. Truly, it looked more like an antique museum than a hotel, and the price looked pretty reasonable as well--- so I thought, I'll stay in Hat Yai city proper for a couple of days and then stay in Songkhla for a couple of days. I really had no idea what it would be like, but the photos I saw online didn't look like any place that I'd ever seen in Thailand.

Upon arrival at my hotel, I was amazed. It was filled with all kinds of Chinese pottery and the architecture of the building itself was unique and notable. There was even an interesting looking cafe attached where I thought I might want to get a coffee.

I wandered up the stairs where it was quite hot! 
I found this large ceramic dish though. 
I wonder if it was ever used for serving food. . .




The only downside was that my room was tiny! It was interestingly decorated however.

I decided that I would probably be spending most of my time outdoors anyway, exploring, and went to get some coffee at the coffeeshop.


I did a little sketchy sketch in the cafe.
I then set out to wander around the local area.

I wandered into a little bookshop. 
All of the books were in Thai, but it was such a cute, quirky space and there was also some artwork on display and for sale.

I made it my next mission to check out some of the interesting looking coffee shops around town!

deliciousness found in the Johor Bahru airport

It was my first time going to the airport in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, even after having been to JB (as the locals call it) multiple times, as I was generally flying in and out of Singapore. Suddenly though, I discovered how much cheaper it was to fly to other Malaysian and Thai cities from JB. My boss said to me, “It’s a very small airport,” to which I nodded. I couldn’t imagine that it would be a large airport, as JB is a fairly small city. In fact, I had no idea that there was an airport there until recent times. Which is why, I was incredibly surprised when I did finally fly out of it, it had pretty amazing food options and shopping. Walking in, there were several Malaysian chain restaurants and kiosks as well as a fancy Japanese coffee chain. little bun cafe in JB!

The students in my adult class took me out for lunch for our last lesson in an area of Johor Bahru called Eco Botanic.  We went to a place called Little Bun Cafe that specializes in homemade brioche. It's a unique place in that you first choose which kind of brioche - we got plain, but they had various ones like pandan and ham/cheese. They steam the brioche in a bamboo steamer and serve it hot and fresh at your table. You can choose some spreads to go with the bread and we decided on cream cheese and honey kaya  (Malaysian coconut jam). The brioche was so good!  We also sampled the breakfast plate and a couple of different pasta dishes. I was loving all of the mushrooms. I also ordered a latte, which I almost never order because I'm very picky about lattes, but this one blew my mind!  It was absolutely delicious.  A big thank you to my wonderful students!

Coffee shops and street art in Songkhla Old Town

Exploring Songkhla Old Town on foot made for some interesting photography opportunities! I had heard that there was a lot of street art as well as local coffee shops, so I set out for a stroll. I feel like someone's watching me. . .  sewing machines anyone? hmmm... maybe I should apply for a job here. I find it interesting that a hair salon is open to the world like this. I would definitely have gone in to this costume shop if it had been open. ! I then wandered into this coffee shop. It was quite popular, spacious and airy. For some reason, they served my Americano with the hot water on the side. I thought it was just something quirky about this cafe, but I soon found that the other coffee shops in town did the same thing  (as seen in the second photo below at Comeback Coffee) another sketchy sketch I found a shop selling these weirdly realistic ice cream bars with animal faces.
