deliciousness found in the Johor Bahru airport
It was my first time going to the airport in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, even after having been to JB (as the locals call it) multiple times, as I was generally flying in and out of Singapore. Suddenly though, I discovered how much cheaper it was to fly to other Malaysian and Thai cities from JB. My boss said to me, “It’s a very small airport,” to which I nodded. I couldn’t imagine that it would be a large airport, as JB is a fairly small city. In fact, I had no idea that there was an airport there until recent times. Which is why, I was incredibly surprised when I did finally fly out of it, it had pretty amazing food options and shopping. Walking in, there were several Malaysian chain restaurants and kiosks as well as a fancy Japanese coffee chain. I got some coffee, and then bought some tiramisu almonds- SO yum!- at a Beryl's (Malaysian chocolate company) gift shop. I breezed through security, which was pretty easy and friendly.
After security, I thought that there wouldn't be as many food options inside, but there was a LOT, local foods and international chains.
But for me the highlight was finding a very well stocked CU, a Korean convenience store. To my delight, this particular CU was full of a treasure trove of things, as well as some prepared foods that I had never seen before.
Goodies gathered:
marron & tiramisu
exquisite! — a layer of chestnut caramel at the bottom, soft cake, cream, dark cocoa powder on top
reminded me of my favorite childhood dessert - a trifle
also reminded me of the “butterscotch snowball” that I used to get at the Chicken House (near Cape Cod). A caramel sauce in the very bottom with a light (Angel food?) cake on top that soaks up the sauce topped with ice cream, whipped cream, and more caramel. All of the flavors blend together in the most amazing harmonious flavor explosion.
If I ever go to Korea, I am going to see if this chef has a restaurant!
hotteok with kimchee and chicken- super crispy on the outside, deep fried vibe
rose buldak chicken burger— totally stuffed with fried chicken pieces— bulging and had cheese. Was good, sauce was a bit sweet on the deep fried chicken pieces. I would have prefered if it had just been left crispy.
CU is the thing which I didn’t know I needed in my life until this moment.
